Better Performance for Less Cash: What I’d Buy Instead of the $625 Chameleon MPAS 2.0
If you’ve spent any time looking at HF portable antennas, you’ve seen the Chameleon MPAS 2.0. Coming in at around $625, the package gives you:
- A ground spike
- 50 feet of coax with a common-mode choke
- A vertical element (MIL whip + extension)
- A single radial wire
- A 73-foot wire for sloper/NVIS setups
Chameleon often markets this as “multiple antennas,” but let’s be real: it’s one transformer with a few different mounting configurations.
At that price point, it begs the question: What kind of antenna system can you buy or build for under $625 that will easily outperform the Chameleon MPAS 2.0?
Here is how I would spend that budget instead to get a setup that is lighter, more flexible, and vastly superior in signal performance.
The Breakdown: A Better Modular Kit for $540
Rather than locked into one lossy matching unit, you can assemble a complete, multi-antenna kit using high-quality individual components.
1. Coax: 50′ Run of RG8X (~$80)
Start with high-quality, durable coax. A 50-foot run of ABR coax gives you a reliable feedline that will hold up to field use without adding unnecessary loss.
2. EFHW: Spooltenna Parks 40-10 (~$149)
I vastly prefer this over the Chameleon hybrid transformer. It’s cheaper, far more compact, and delivers a noticeably better Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) when tested in the exact same field environment.
3. Vertical: CaHR Hydra + 17′ Whip (~$200)
As a vertical antenna, this combo will perform substantially better than the stock MPAS. The only real limitation is that without an added loading coil, your lowest native band will be 20 meters. However, it is smaller, lighter, and exceptionally well built.
4. Common-Mode Choke: DIY Build (~$20)
You can easily build a solid common-mode choke for under $20. It will perform just as well as (or better than) the Chameleon option, with the added benefit that you can move it between any of your coax runs or antenna setups.
5. Mounting: Heavy-Duty Ground Spike (~$50)
A simple, rugged $50 ground spike holds your vertical mount securely wherever you set up camp.
Total Core Investment: ~$500
For $500 (nearly $125 less than the MPAS 2.0 package), you get the CaHR Hydra, the Spooltenna EFHW, premium coax, a ground spike, a choke, and a 17′ whip.
You already have a system that outperforms the stock MPAS, but the real power comes in how cheaply you can expand it.
The Ultimate $600 “Kit” Upgrades
If you want to spend the extra $120 to roughly match the MPAS 2.0 price point, here is where that money actually goes to work:
- Add a 2nd 17′ Whip (+$70): Screw both whips into the Hydra hub, and you instantly have a high-performing horizontal dipole that deploys in seconds.
- Add a 200′ Spool of Wire (+$50): Cut two runs of wire to your desired band lengths, bypass the whips, and you now have a tuned wire dipole or Inverted-V. This is a far superior configuration for NVIS and close-in regional communications compared to a random wire sloper.
The Verdict
For $620, you aren’t just getting one matching unit with a couple of attachments. You’re getting:
- A high-efficiency 40-10m End-Fed Half-Wave
- A lightweight, resonant 20-6m vertical
- A collapsible horizontal dipole
- A full-size wire dipole / Inverted-V for low-band NVIS
- The Coffee and Ham Radio (CaHR) team is constantly evolving their ecosystem and with the recent release of “the backpack” which is a 4:1 transformer for the Hydra system, you can continue to expand this setup as they add options.
You get vastly more configuration options, significantly higher radiation efficiency, better SNR, and a kit tailored for actual performance rather than convenience compromises.
