Between the random wire, the EFHW, the classic dipole, and a Moxon, there is no single best portable HF antenna, only the one that fits what you are actually doing that day. Here is a straightforward way to decide, based on antennas already covered on this site.

Random wire: when you want simplicity and flexibility

A random wire, cut to one of the magic lengths that avoid half wave resonance problems, paired with a 9:1 unun and a tuner, is the lightest, most packable option and the most forgiving about deployment. Throw it over a tree branch at almost any angle, tune across several bands with one wire, and you are on the air. The tradeoff is that you need a tuner, and performance, while solid, is generally a notch below a properly cut resonant antenna on any single band.

EFHW: when you want no-tuner simplicity on specific bands

An end fed half wave, built around a 49:1 transformer, is cut deliberately to be resonant, which means no tuner is needed on its design bands, and most EFHW antennas are built to cover several harmonically related bands well. This is the antenna to bring when you know which bands you want to work and would rather not carry a tuner at all. The cost is a slightly more particular counterpoise requirement and a bit more setup precision than a genuinely random wire.

Dipole: when you want predictable, center fed performance

A center fed dipole, whether full size or a multiband fan dipole, gives the most textbook predictable performance of the group, with a genuinely balanced feed and no ground or counterpoise dependency the way end fed designs have. It needs two support points instead of one, which can be a real constraint in the field, but where you have the room, a dipole is often the most efficient, most drama free option.

Moxon: when you want gain and directionality, not just a signal out

A Moxon is the odd one out on this list, since the others are all designed to simply radiate a signal in most directions, while a Moxon actively concentrates it, trading footprint for real forward gain and excellent front to back rejection. Bring a Moxon when you already know roughly which direction you need to work, chasing a specific DX opening, working a contest from a fixed direction, or fighting through local noise from one side, rather than as a general purpose everyday antenna.

A simple decision guide

  • One support point, minimal gear, working several bands: random wire.
  • Know your bands ahead of time, want to skip the tuner: EFHW.
  • Have two supports available, want the cleanest textbook performance: dipole.
  • Need gain and directionality toward a known target: Moxon.

Most portable operators end up owning more than one of these and choosing based on the trip, the terrain, and the goal for that particular outing, rather than settling on a single do everything antenna. Building a small kit that covers two or three of these options gives you the flexibility to match the antenna to the day instead of forcing the day around whatever antenna happens to be in the bag.
