Modern weather radar is genuinely impressive, but it cannot see everything happening at ground level, whether a rotating cloud actually produced a tornado, how large hail really was when it hit, or how deep flood water got on a specific street. SkyWarn exists to fill exactly that gap, using trained volunteer spotters, a huge number of them licensed hams, to report what is actually happening on the ground in real time back to the National Weather Service.

What SkyWarn actually is

SkyWarn is a National Weather Service program that trains volunteers, through a free class usually a few hours long, to recognize and accurately report severe weather: rotating wall clouds, funnel clouds, hail size, wind damage, and flooding. Trained spotters relay these reports to their local NWS office, often through amateur radio nets specifically organized for this purpose during active severe weather, giving forecasters ground-truth information that radar alone cannot provide and that directly feeds into warnings issued to the public.

Why ham radio specifically matters here

Cell networks can become congested or fail entirely during a major severe weather event, exactly the moment accurate reports matter most. A repeater-based SkyWarn net, organized and net-controlled by trained hams, keeps functioning independent of cellular infrastructure, and it lets a net control station efficiently gather and relay multiple simultaneous reports from spotters spread across a wide area in a structured way that a flood of individual phone calls to the NWS office never could.

Getting trained and getting involved

Your local National Weather Service forecast office runs SkyWarn spotter training sessions, often seasonally ahead of severe weather season in your region, and many are now offered online as well as in person. The training itself does not require an amateur radio license at all, spotters can report by phone or app too, but joining your local SkyWarn net specifically as a ham lets you both report your own observations and help relay other spotters’ reports during an actual severe weather net, which is where amateur radio’s real value in this system shows up.

What a real SkyWarn net looks like

When the local NWS office activates severe weather operations, a designated net control station opens the local SkyWarn net on a specific repeater, and trained spotters check in with their location and report specific observations using the structured terminology covered in training, rather than general commentary. Net control relays significant reports directly to the NWS, sometimes through a direct phone or data link set up for exactly this purpose, keeping the actual severe weather net itself focused and efficient rather than cluttered with general chatter.

A genuinely meaningful way to use a license

Of everything covered on this blog, SkyWarn is one of the more directly, immediately useful applications of a ham license, since an accurate spotter report can genuinely factor into a warning that gives people in its path a few extra minutes of notice.
