“Which radio should I get” is one of the most common questions in prepping and radio circles, and the honest answer depends entirely on what you’re trying to do. GMRS, amateur VHF/UHF, and HF aren’t really competing for the same job. They solve different problems. Here’s how they actually stack up.
GMRS: the no-test option
- License: $35 for a 10-year term, no test, covers your immediate family under one callsign, apply online through the FCC
- Frequencies: UHF, 462-467 MHz, 30 channels total (8 main 462 MHz channels, 8 paired 467 MHz repeater-input channels, 14 interstitial channels shared with FRS)
- Power: up to 50W on mobile/base/repeater stations using the main channels; interstitial channels are capped at 5W ERP (462 MHz) or 500mW ERP (467 MHz, handheld only)
- Hardware: radios must be FCC type-certified for GMRS and can’t be modified. You buy a radio and use it as-is, no programming your own frequencies.
- Repeaters: allowed, and a growing number of community and personal GMRS repeaters exist for extended range
Amateur radio VHF/UHF: more work, way more capability
- License: requires passing the Technician exam (35 questions, need 26 correct), no cost for the license itself beyond exam fees, no minimum age
- Frequencies: access to 17 bands from 50 MHz up, including 6m, 2m, 1.25m, 70cm, and several microwave bands, vastly more spectrum than GMRS’s single UHF slice
- Power: up to 1,500W PEP on VHF/UHF, though realistically most handhelds run 5W and mobiles 25-50W
- Hardware: fully programmable radios, you can set any frequency within your privileges, use any mode (FM, digital voice like DMR/D-STAR/Fusion, packet, APRS, and more)
- Repeaters: a much larger and more varied repeater landscape, including internet-linked systems (IRLP, EchoLink, Allstar) and full digital voice networks with worldwide talkgroups
Here’s the thing worth being honest about: for simplex, radio-to-radio range, GMRS and ham VHF/UHF are governed by the same physics. Both are line-of-sight UHF/VHF services, and a similarly powered handheld with a similar antenna will cover similar ground either way. Amateur radio’s real advantage isn’t raw range, it’s the depth of the ecosystem: more repeaters, more linking options, more bands, more modes, and the ability to build your own infrastructure if you want to.
HF: a completely different propagation story
This is where things change entirely. VHF/UHF signals travel in more or less a straight line and get blocked by hills, buildings, and the curve of the earth. HF signals can refract off the ionosphere and come back down hundreds or thousands of miles away, a phenomenon called skywave or “skip.” That means HF can connect two points with zero infrastructure in between, no repeater, no tower, no internet link. Just two radios and the right band at the right time of day.
The catch: a Technician license only grants limited HF privileges (a slice of 10m phone, plus some CW segments on 80m/40m/15m). To really use HF, you’ll want a General class license or higher, which opens up all the HF bands that make long-distance, infrastructure-free communication possible.
Hardware and antenna comparison
- GMRS radios: $30-150 for handhelds, more for mobile/base units. Simple, turnkey, small antennas.
- Ham VHF/UHF radios: similar handheld price range ($25-500+), with mobiles and base stations scaling up from there. Antennas are compact, a quarter-wave on 2m is about 19 inches, on 70cm about 7 inches, easy to mount on a vehicle or backpack.
- HF radios: generally $400-2,000+, and that’s before you add an antenna, feedline, and often a tuner. A quarter-wave vertical on 40m is roughly 33 feet tall; a half-wave dipole on 40m needs about 65 feet of wire end to end. HF demands real estate that VHF/UHF simply doesn’t.
Range: what to actually expect
- GMRS / ham VHF/UHF simplex (handheld to handheld): typically 1-5 miles depending on terrain, more with elevation or a rooftop/vehicle antenna
- Repeater-assisted VHF/UHF: 20-50+ miles from a well-sited repeater on a tower or mountaintop, sometimes much farther in flat or coastal terrain
- HF, NVIS (near-vertical incidence skywave) on 80m/40m: tens to a few hundred miles, great for regional coverage without a repeater
- HF, standard skywave: hundreds to thousands of miles, sometimes worldwide, depending on band, time of day, and solar conditions
Common and practical uses
- GMRS: family communication, off-roading and convoys, camping, general short-range coordination, the easiest entry point since there’s no test
- Ham VHF/UHF: everything GMRS does, plus repeater nets, ARES/RACES emergency communication groups, digital voice modes, and a much wider community and infrastructure to tap into
- HF: long-distance contacts (DX), regional nets that don’t depend on any repeater, emergency communication when local infrastructure is down, and general ragchewing or contesting across huge distances
The SHTF angle
Both GMRS and ham VHF/UHF are excellent for local, line-of-sight coordination, think family, neighborhood, or small group communication within a few miles. But both are fundamentally limited by that line-of-sight range unless you have access to a working repeater, and repeaters depend on infrastructure you don’t control (more on that in the next post). HF is the one option on this list that can reach far beyond your local area using nothing but your own equipment and your own power source, which is exactly why it’s worth having in the mix if long-range, infrastructure-independent communication matters to your plans.
