A radio and an antenna get you on the air. A handful of basic test tools are what let you actually understand what your station is doing, rather than guessing based on how a contact sounds or whether the SWR light happens to be lit. None of what follows is exotic or expensive, and all of it earns its keep regularly on my own bench.
A dummy load
A dummy load lets you key up your radio at full power without actually radiating anything, safely testing transmit function, checking output power, or letting a new operator practice keying a mic without putting a signal on the air where it could interfere with anyone. A basic 50 ohm, non-inductive dummy load rated for your radio’s full output and duty cycle is genuinely one of the first accessories every new ham should own, and mine gets used constantly for quick checks after any change to the station.
A wattmeter, ideally one that also reads SWR
An inline wattmeter tells you actual forward and reflected power, which matters for two reasons: confirming your radio is really putting out what it claims, and catching a rising SWR problem before it damages a final amplifier stage. Many modern radios display this internally, but an external meter catches problems a radio’s own built-in display sometimes smooths over or under-reports, and it lets you check any radio, including older gear with no built-in metering at all.
A basic multimeter
A cheap digital multimeter handles far more of the actual troubleshooting in this hobby than people expect: checking a power supply’s actual output voltage under load, verifying continuity on a suspect cable, or confirming a battery is actually holding the charge it claims. This is one of the least glamorous tools on the bench and one of the most frequently used, especially any time something stops working and the cause is not obvious.
An antenna analyzer or NanoVNA
Whether it is a budget NanoVNA or a dedicated analyzer, this is the tool that actually tells you why an antenna is behaving badly rather than just confirming that it is. Sweeping resonance off the air, without transmitting a watt, is genuinely one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades over the old approach of trimming a wire an inch at a time and re-keying the radio after every cut.
What I would tell a new ham to buy first
A dummy load and a basic multimeter are genuinely inexpensive and cover the majority of everyday troubleshooting needs. An antenna analyzer is the next upgrade once you start building or modifying your own antennas regularly, since that is where the real payoff shows up. None of this needs to happen all at once, but each of these tools has paid for itself many times over in time saved compared to guessing.
