This is my wife’s radio, and the one we hand to family members who are not hams but still need to stay in touch with us when we are out and about. What to Know Before You Buy
This is a GMRS radio, not a ham radio, so keep in mind the cross-band repeat and a few other features available on the ham-band UV-9P are restricted or removed here to stay within Part 95E rules, that is by design, not a flaw. You will also need a GMRS license for your household to legally transmit on it, which is inexpensive and does not require a test, but it is a real requirement, not a suggestion.

The Verdict
For a family GMRS radio, this has been an easy recommendation. It is simple enough that anyone in my family can pick it up and use it, strong enough to actually reach the repeaters we rely on, and capable of scanning the rest of the band when we just want to listen.
