SWR is the number every new ham gets nervous about before they understand what it means. It shows up on the radio’s display, on a meter, on a tuner, and it gets treated like a pass or fail grade for an antenna. It’s simpler than that, and understanding what it actually measures makes the whole idea of antenna matching click.
What the number actually measures
SWR stands for Standing Wave Ratio, and it describes how much power your radio sends out gets reflected back instead of radiated by the antenna. A perfect match, where the antenna system looks exactly like the 50 ohm load your radio expects, gives you an SWR of 1:1, meaning nothing comes back. Every antenna, feedline, and connector combination is a compromise, so in practice you are always dealing with some reflected power. The ratio just tells you how much.
What counts as good, and what counts as a problem
Anything under about 1.5:1 is usually sufficient, while not optimal, but you may never notice it in practice. Once you get to 2:1 or higher the radio will often reduce their own power output automatically rather than risk damage. The real danger zone is high SWR combined with high power, particularly on solid state finals that were not designed for tube-style tolerance. A reading of 2.5:1 or higher sustained at full power is where you risk actually damaging your radio, not just losing some efficiency.
SWR is not the same as a good antenna
This is the part that trips people up. A dummy load gives you a perfect 1:1 SWR and radiates nothing at all. SWR only tells you how well matched the antenna system looks to your radio at the frequency you are on, not how efficiently it actually radiates your signal or how well it receives. A resonant dipole at 1.2:1 and a compromised antenna tuned flat with an external tuner can both show 1:1 on your meter while performing very differently on the air. Low SWR is necessary, but it is not proof of a good antenna.
How to actually fix high SWR
- Check your connections first. A loose PL-259 or a bad crimp causes more high SWR readings than a genuinely wrong antenna length

- If the antenna is resonant but cut for the wrong frequency, trim or lengthen it and recheck, a little at a time
- If trimming isn’t practical, an antenna tuner, automatic or manual, presents a good match to the radio even when the antenna itself is not resonant. I compare the two approaches in Automatic vs Manual Antenna Tuners
What to measure it with
Most modern radios display SWR right on the front panel, which is fine for a quick check. For anything more serious, a dedicated antenna analyzer is worth owning, since it lets you sweep across a whole band and see exactly where your antenna is actually resonant without transmitting a single watt. SWR is a diagnostic number, not a verdict on your antenna’s worth. Keep it in a safe range for your radio, use it to catch real problems like bad connections or a mis-cut antenna, and then stop staring at it and get on the air.
