If you have ever tried to use a repeater and heard nothing but silence, or you have been told you need to set a “PL tone” and had no idea what that meant, this post is for you. PL tones, more formally called CTCSS tones, are one of those small details that trip up new hams constantly. The concept is simple once it clicks.

The names first

CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System. That is the technical name. PL stands for Private Line, which is Motorola’s trademarked brand name for the same thing. You will also hear it called a “tone,” a “sub-audible tone,” or a “tone squelch.” They all refer to the same feature, so do not let the different names confuse you.

What a CTCSS tone actually is

A CTCSS tone is a single low-frequency tone that your radio transmits underneath your voice. These tones sit below the range of normal speech (they run from about 67 Hz up to around 250 Hz), which is why they are called sub-audible. In practice you do not really hear them, because radios filter them out of the audio you listen to. They are there to be detected by equipment, not by your ears.

Each standard tone has a specific frequency, like 100.0 Hz or 146.2 Hz. When you “set a PL tone” on your radio, you are telling it to add that particular tone to everything you transmit.

How it works on a repeater

Here is the core idea. Many repeaters are configured to only respond to signals that carry the correct CTCSS tone. The repeater is listening for that specific tone. If your transmission includes it, the repeater keys up and relays you. If your transmission is missing the tone or has the wrong one, the repeater simply ignores you, even though your signal is reaching it perfectly well.

This is exactly why a new ham can be transmitting on the right frequency, with a strong signal, and still get nothing. The radio and frequency are correct, but the required tone is not being sent. Add the correct PL tone and suddenly the repeater answers.

Why repeaters use tones

  • Rejecting interference. Requiring a tone helps a repeater ignore noise, interference, and signals from distant repeaters on the same frequency. It only opens up for stations sending the right tone.
  • Sharing frequencies. In crowded areas, different repeaters can share a frequency and use different tones so each responds only to its own users.
  • Quieter receive. On your end, tone squelch can keep your radio silent unless a signal carrying your chosen tone comes in, so you are not bothered by every bit of noise or unrelated chatter on the frequency.

Transmit tone versus receive tone

This is where the settings on your radio can get confusing. There are two separate things you can configure:

  • Encode (transmit tone). Your radio sends the tone when you transmit. This is what a repeater needs to hear from you. For most repeater use, this is all you need to set.
  • Decode (receive tone squelch). Your radio stays quiet unless it hears a signal with the matching tone. This is optional and is about keeping your own speaker quiet, not about accessing the repeater.

On many radios these show up as settings like “Tone” (encode only) versus “TSQL” or “Tone Squelch” (encode and decode). If you set full tone squelch and pick the wrong receive tone, you can end up hearing nothing, so when in doubt, start with just the transmit (encode) tone that the repeater requires.

A quick word on DCS

You may also run across DCS (Digital-Coded Squelch), sometimes called DPL. It does the same job as CTCSS but uses a digital code instead of a single analog tone. If a repeater or contact uses DCS, you set the matching digital code rather than a tone frequency. The idea is identical: only signals with the right code get through.

Finding the right tone

The tone a repeater requires is published in repeater directories and databases (RepeaterBook is a popular one). Look up the repeater, note its listed tone, program that tone as your transmit tone, and you should be in business. If you ever move into range of a repeater and cannot get in despite a strong signal, the missing or incorrect PL tone is almost always the first thing to check.
