I owned radios for ten years before I ever got licensed. GMRS handhelds, scanners, VHF and UHF gear, I had a decent little collection and a decent amount of hands-on time with it. I could program a radio, I understood repeaters, I knew my way around CTCSS tones and channel plans. I thought I had a pretty solid grasp on this hobby.
I didn’t. Not really. I was operating inside a small, fenced-off corner of what radio actually is, and I didn’t know it until I got licensed and the fence came down.
What was actually missing
GMRS and general VHF/UHF listening will teach you real things: repeater theory, tone squelch, basic propagation, how to program a radio without losing your mind. But it’s all short-range, line-of-sight stuff. I had no exposure to skywave propagation, no concept of how a signal could bounce off the ionosphere and land three states away, no digital modes beyond whatever DMR chatter I could pick up on a scanner. I didn’t know what a dipole actually did versus a vertical, or why anyone would care. I was, in hindsight, a spectator standing just outside the actual hobby, close enough to see it, not close enough to touch it.
Getting licensed didn’t just add a legal right to transmit on new frequencies. It reframed everything I already knew. Repeater theory I already understood suddenly connected to a much bigger picture: linked digital networks, HF propagation, satellite passes, emergency communications infrastructure. It all clicked into place at once, and I remember thinking: why didn’t I do this ten years ago?
Technician gets you in the door. General is where it opens up.
Technician is a genuinely great starting point, full VHF/UHF privileges, access to local repeaters, digital voice, satellites, APRS. But it only gives you a small sliver of HF: a slice of 10m phone and some CW segments. If you stop there, you’re missing the part of the hobby that made me fall in love with it.
General class is the upgrade that matters most. It opens the vast majority of the HF bands, 80m through 10m, phone, CW, and digital, and that’s where amateur radio stops being local and starts being genuinely limitless. The jump from Technician to General is a single 35-question exam, and it is, without exaggeration, the best few hours of studying I’ve put into this hobby.
HF is where it gets amazing
Here’s what nobody explained to me before I had General privileges: HF isn’t one thing, it’s two completely different superpowers depending on how you use it.
Run a low horizontal wire on 40m or 80m and you get NVIS, near-vertical incidence skywave, which throws your signal almost straight up and brings it back down anywhere within a few hundred miles, with no dead zones and no dependence on a repeater or the internet. That’s regional coverage that works when nothing else does, statewide nets, EmComm, reaching family or fellow hams across the region with nothing but your own gear and a battery.
Change the same band or hop up to 20m, 17m, or 15m, and adjust your antenna for lower-angle radiation, and suddenly you’re talking to Europe, Japan, South America, or wherever the propagation happens to be open that day. Same license, same basic equipment category, two entirely different worlds. I had no idea this was even possible before I got licensed. Now it’s the thing I look forward to most.
Studying for this is easier than you think
If the idea of a licensing exam is what’s held you back, let that worry go. Every single question that could appear on your test is published publicly ahead of time, there are no surprises, no trick questions, nothing hidden. The Technician exam is 35 questions pulled from a public pool of around 400, and you need 26 right to pass. General is the same format, another 35 questions, same 26-to-pass threshold, and you can take it back to back with Technician in the same test session if you’re ready.
Free tools like HamStudy.org will drill you on the actual question pool until you’re consistently scoring well above passing, often in two to four weeks of casual study. No Morse code is required for any license class anymore. A test session typically costs around $15, plus a one-time $35 FCC application fee that covers you no matter how many license classes you pass that day, and remote online testing has made it possible to test from home on almost any day of the week. There has never been an easier time to go from zero to licensed.
It’s not just voice anymore
The other thing I wasn’t prepared for: how much of modern ham radio isn’t voice at all. Digital modes have genuinely changed the game. FT8 lets you make solid, confirmed contacts at power levels and with antennas that would never have worked for SSB voice, weak-signal decoding that pulls a readable contact out of what sounds like pure static. DMR, D-STAR, and Yaesu’s System Fusion link repeaters and hotspots together into worldwide digital voice networks you can reach from a handheld. Winlink lets you send actual email over HF with no internet required at all. None of this existed in the form it does today when I first picked up a radio, and all of it is available the moment you’re licensed.
Just do it
If you’re sitting where I sat, GMRS radio in hand, feeling like you already understand this hobby because you know your way around a repeater, I get it. But there’s a whole world past that fence, HF propagation, digital modes, global contacts, regional emergency nets that work when everything else is down, and none of it is behind some impossible technical barrier. It’s a couple weeks of studying and a test session away. I wish I’d done it ten years earlier. Don’t make my mistake.
