If a J-pole or Slim Jim feels like more build than you want to take on, a quarter-wave ground plane vertical is the simplest step down: one radiating element, a handful of radials, and a connector, with no matching stub or tap point calculation involved at all. It is not quite as forgiving to feed as a J-pole, but it is genuinely the fastest antenna on this list to design and build from scratch.

The basic design

A ground plane vertical uses a quarter-wave radiating element fed directly against a set of quarter-wave radials angled downward from the feedpoint, typically at somewhere between 30 and 45 degrees below horizontal, which is what brings the antenna’s natural impedance close to the 50 ohms your coax and radio expect. Three or four radials is the typical minimum for a workable match, though more radials generally improve performance slightly at the cost of a bulkier build.

What you need

  • A panel-mount SO-239, BNC, or N-type connector, whichever matches your intended feedline and radio.
  • Stiff wire or brazing rod for both the radiating element and the radials, thick enough to hold its shape without drooping.
  • A small piece of scrap PVC or a project box to mount the connector and give the radials somewhere solid to attach.
  • Solder for a clean, reliable connection at the feedpoint.

Calculating the lengths

A quarter wavelength in free space, adjusted by the standard velocity factor used for wire antennas, gives you the target length for both the vertical element and the radials, and any online VHF/UHF antenna calculator will do this math for you instantly given your target frequency. For a dual-band build, most people simply build two separate antennas, one for 2m and one for 70cm, rather than trying to force a single element to cover both bands well, since a purpose-built single-band ground plane is a genuinely simple and quick build to duplicate.

Mounting and deployment

A ground plane vertical mounts easily to the top of a mast or a painter’s pole, and its lightweight, simple construction makes it a genuinely practical field antenna for POTA-style operating on VHF and UHF, not just a permanent home installation. Since the radials themselves do the job a counterpoise or ground system does on HF, there is no need for actual ground stakes or a buried radial system, everything the antenna needs is built directly into the structure itself.

Checking and tuning

Once assembled, a NanoVNA or antenna analyzer will confirm your resonant frequency, and small trims to the vertical element’s length are the standard way to shift resonance if your first cut lands slightly off target, exactly the same iterative process used for HF wire antennas, just at a much smaller and faster scale given how short VHF and UHF elements actually are.
