The most frustrating thing about digital voice in ham radio isn’t any single mode. It’s that there are several, and none of them are compatible with each other out of the box. DMR, D-STAR, and Yaesu System Fusion (YSF) each have their own hardware ecosystem, their own network architecture, and their own community. Here’s how they actually stack up, plus a look at the smaller players.

DMR

DMR started life as a commercial/business radio standard (ETSI spec, widely used by Motorola and others) before hams adopted it, and that origin shows in both its strengths and its learning curve.

  • Pros: by far the cheapest entry point, capable handhelds start around $100-150; the widest hardware selection of any digital mode (Anytone, TYT, Retevis, Alinco, and others all make DMR radios); two independent timeslots per repeater channel for more efficient spectrum use; the Brandmeister network alone connects over 1,300 repeaters and 3,000+ hotspots worldwide, and independent networks like TGIF add thousands more talkgroups on top of that.
  • Cons: the steepest learning curve of the three major modes: codeplugs, talkgroups, color codes, and timeslots are all new concepts if you’re coming from analog FM; the ecosystem itself is fragmented across competing networks (Brandmeister, TGIF, and others) that don’t always share talkgroups seamlessly; uses the licensed AMBE+2 vocoder, so a small licensing cost is baked into every radio.
  • Hardware: Anytone AT-D878UV II, TYT MD-380/390, Retevis RT3S, and similar. Requires a free DMR ID from RadioID.net before you can transmit on any network.

D-STAR

D-STAR is the oldest of the three major digital modes (developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League and brought to market by Icom in the early 2000s) and it was purpose-built for amateur use from the start rather than adapted from a commercial standard.

  • Pros: callsign routing is D-STAR’s signature feature: you can route a call directly to another specific operator’s callsign anywhere on the network, not just broadcast to a talkgroup; a mature, flexible reflector system (REF/DPlus, DCS, XRF/DExtra, and newer XLX reflectors) makes linking repeaters together straightforward; DPRS gives you APRS-style position and data alongside voice; long track record and strong documentation.
  • Cons: historically limited to Icom (and more recently some Kenwood and Alinco) radios, so the hardware pool is smaller and generally pricier than DMR; fewer active repeaters in a lot of areas compared to DMR’s footprint; the reflector-linking model, while powerful, is less immediately intuitive to a newcomer than DMR’s “pick a talkgroup and go” approach; also uses a licensed AMBE vocoder.
  • Hardware: Icom ID-51, ID-52, ID-5100, IC-9700, IC-705; Kenwood TH-D74; Alinco’s DJ-X100T was one of the first non-Icom/Kenwood D-STAR radios to reach the market.

YSF / System Fusion

Yaesu System Fusion (C4FM) is the newest of the three major modes and was designed with the smoothest possible on-ramp from analog in mind.

  • Pros: Automatic Mode Select (AMS) lets a Fusion repeater and radio handle analog FM and C4FM digital automatically, with no manual mode-switching required, genuinely the easiest of the three to just pick up and use; excellent, natural-sounding audio, especially in wide C4FM mode; WIRES-X internet linking uses a simple, room-based model that’s easy to grasp coming from nothing.
  • Cons: Yaesu-only, you’re locked into one manufacturer’s hardware, and Yaesu radios tend to sit at a higher price point than comparable DMR gear; smaller overall network footprint than DMR in most of the US; less flexible than DMR’s on-the-fly talkgroup model if you want fine-grained control over who you’re talking to.
  • Hardware: Yaesu FT-70D, FT3D/FT5D, FTM-300, FTM-400XD, and similar.

The smaller players: P25, NXDN, and M17

A few other digital modes show up in the ham world, mostly in smaller pockets:

  • P25 (Project 25): the public-safety/commercial standard. A handful of ham repeaters run P25, often set up by operators who also monitor or work with public safety comms, but the amateur footprint is small compared to DMR, D-STAR, or Fusion. Hardware is frequently surplus commercial gear rather than purpose-built ham radios, and tends to be pricier.
  • NXDN: a joint Icom/Kenwood commercial standard with an even smaller amateur presence, mostly regional pockets rather than a broad national network.
  • M17: the newest entrant, and the only one on this list that’s fully open source. Started in 2019 by Wojciech Kaczmarski (SP5WWP) and a community of contributors, M17 uses the free, patent-free Codec 2 vocoder instead of a licensed codec, and identifies stations directly by callsign rather than requiring a centralized numeric ID system. It’s still small next to the three major modes, but growing, with the first commercial M17 handhelds (like the Connect Systems CS7000-M17) shipping in 2024. Worth knowing if you’re hotspot-curious: the core MMDVM project dropped official M17 support in mid-2025, though community firmware forks have restored it, so double-check compatibility before assuming your existing hotspot board supports it out of the box.

The honest bottom line

None of these modes talk to each other natively. That’s the one universal downside across the whole category, and it’s worth accepting going in rather than being surprised by it later. In practice, most people end up choosing based on one of two things: what’s actually active on repeaters near them (check RepeaterBook before buying anything), or, if local coverage is thin or nonexistent, defaulting to DMR with a hotspot, since it guarantees you a huge network regardless of what’s nearby. If you already own radios from one manufacturer, or a specific mode dominates your local club or region, that’s usually reason enough to just go with what your friends are already using. Being the only person in your area on a mode nobody else runs gets old fast.
