A budget 3D printer has quietly become one of the more useful tools in my shack, not for anything glamorous, but for the small stuff nobody makes a commercial product for.
Antenna and Mast Hardware
Custom center insulators, dipole end insulators, and mast clamps sized exactly for your specific pole diameter are all things you’d otherwise be improvising with hardware store parts. PETG or ASA filament holds up to UV and outdoor temperature swings far better than standard PLA, which gets brittle in the sun within a season.
Cases and Panel Mounts
The hobbyist community around Thingiverse and Printables has cases for nearly every popular SDR dongle, Digirig, and Raspberry Pi hotspot board, meaning you rarely have to design from scratch. Custom faceplates for a DIY power distribution panel or a Meshtastic node enclosure are also common searches with existing files ready to print.
Files I’ve Actually Printed and Used
These aren’t theoretical picks. I’ve printed and used every one of these, and they’ve all earned a permanent spot in the shack or the go bag.
- BuddiHex Mast Adapter: a mast adapter sized for the Buddipole BuddiHex hexbeam, one of the antennas I run for Field Day.
- Fused Anderson Powerpole Box: a clean junction box for fused Powerpole connections, handy for organizing a 12V distribution setup.
- Wire Antenna End Insulator: my go-to end insulator for wire dipoles and end fed half waves.
- Wire Winder: a solid, no frills winder for keeping antenna wire tangle free between outings.
This is far from a complete list. Between Thingiverse, Printables, and MakerWorld there are thousands of ham specific files out there, and it’s worth a search before you assume you need to design or buy something custom.
Where It Actually Pays Off
The real value isn’t replacing things you can buy, it’s filling the gaps where nothing commercial exists for your exact setup: a bracket that fits your specific Jeep dash, a battery box divider sized for your particular cell configuration, a belt clip that fits a radio whose OEM clip broke years ago. If you’re on the fence about buying a printer for this, a $600 to $900 model is more than enough, you don’t need anything fancy for functional parts.
