When setting up a portable off-grid power solution for camping, overlanding, mobile field operations, or emergency prep, you quickly run into a big decision: should you buy an all-in-one commercial solar generator or build a custom LiFePO4 battery box?
Commercial all-in-one stations from brands like EcoFlow, Jackery, and Predator have exploded in popularity due to their plug-and-play convenience. However, a custom-built 12V DC power box built with individual, high-grade components offers key advantages in efficiency, total battery capacity, and long-term serviceability.
Here is a detailed, side-by-side comparison between my 100Ah Custom DIY Battery Box and three popular commercial off-the-shelf alternatives.

To keep the comparison fair, let’s look at the actual specifications of a custom-built 100Ah system versus three leading commercial options across different price and power tiers.

Battery capacity and chemistry
All four options leverage standard LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery technology, which ensures thousands of charge cycles and maximum thermal safety. However, the DIY build comes out ahead in total energy storage with roughly 1,280 Wh of capacity. That represents about 25% more energy capacity than the EcoFlow Delta 3 or Jackery 1000 v2, and over four times the energy of the entry-level Predator unit.
Solar harvesting efficiency
While commercial units feature integrated solar controllers, the custom build uses an enterprise-grade Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller paired with a 200W panel. Victron controllers are widely recognized in the marine and RV industries for ultra-fast maximum power point tracking, extracting maximum power even in low-light or partially shaded conditions. RF noise floor impact
This is one factor that never shows up on a spec sheet. The internal switching electronics on the EcoFlow, Jackery, and Predator units, both the solar charge controller and the AC inverter, are a common source of broadband electrical noise. That noise can raise the noise floor on HF and even VHF/UHF receivers, sometimes enough to bury weak signals under a layer of hash right when the unit is charging or running the inverter. It is worth testing a unit on your own radio before committing to it for field use, since noise output varies by model and even by individual unit. Why running a radio off an AC inverter fights you twice
Most HF and VHF/UHF radios run on 12V DC directly. Running one off a commercial power station means the station’s inverter converts your battery’s DC to AC, and then your radio’s power supply, if it even needs one, converts it right back to DC. That round trip wastes power and adds noise into your receive audio that a lot of hams do not expect until they hear it. A 12V LiFePO4 battery wired directly to the radio through an Anderson Powerpole connector skips both conversions entirely: it is simpler, quieter, and considerably cheaper per amp hour than paying for a built-in inverter you are not even using for the radio itself. Connectivity and DC power delivery
For users running high-draw DC equipment, 12V portable refrigerators, or communications gear, native connections are critical. The custom build incorporates heavy-duty Anderson Powerpole bulkhead adapters alongside 12V cigarette sockets and high-speed USB-A/C ports. Running gear natively on DC eliminates inverter idle draw, saving significant battery capacity over extended multi-day trips.
Vehicle charging capabilities
Standard power stations charge off a vehicle’s 12V accessory socket, which can sometimes be limited in efficiency or proper voltage regulation. Incorporating a dedicated DC-to-DC charger (such as the Powerwerx 8A unit) ensures a regulated, multi-stage 14.5V charge profile specifically tuned for LiFePO4 chemistry while driving.
Serviceability and longevity
The DIY advantage: commercial units are sealed, integrated packages. If a single internal component fails out of warranty, the entire system often has to be replaced. A custom modular battery box, on the other hand, lets you repair, replace, or upgrade individual components (battery, MPPT charger, USB ports, or wiring) over time without discarding the whole box. Runtime per dollar, do the math yourself
A 100 watt HF radio draws roughly 20 amps at 12V on transmit and a fraction of that on receive. A 100Ah LiFePO4 battery, at a realistic 80 to 90 percent usable capacity, gives you many hours of typical operating, mostly receive with occasional transmit, before needing a recharge. Run the same math against a power station’s rated watt hours, remembering to account for inverter losses, and you will often find a dedicated battery gives you more usable radio runtime per dollar than an equivalent-capacity commercial unit. Cons of Prebuilt Power Stations
- Upgrading capacity is expensive. Adding more Wh to a prebuilt means buying a whole replacement unit or an expensive proprietary add-on battery. On the DIY box, you just swap in a larger battery.
- A dead battery out of warranty is a total loss. Battery failures happen. On a sealed prebuilt, once the warranty runs out, a failed battery means the whole unit is junk. On the DIY box, you just replace the battery.
- No component-level repair. If any part of a prebuilt fails, the sealed unit generally isn’t serviceable. On the DIY box, every component can be serviced or swapped individually.
- Fixed port count. You can’t add more outputs to a prebuilt. On the DIY box, you can add as many ports as your power system can support.
- Paying for features you don’t use. Prebuilts bundle in ports and capabilities you may never touch, which is money spent for nothing. On the DIY box, you only add the components you actually want, and can always add more later.
- Charge speed is fixed. A prebuilt’s charging speed is locked in at the factory. On the DIY box, you can drop in a faster charge controller any time you want.
The verdict: which one fits your needs?
- Choose a commercial unit (EcoFlow / Jackery): if your primary requirement is plug-and-play simplicity, rapid 120V wall charging, and a built-in high-wattage AC inverter to power heavy household appliances like microwaves, power tools, or coffee makers, or gear other than your radio.
- Choose a compact power station (Predator 350): if you need an ultra-lightweight, budget-friendly box purely for charging phones, cameras, or small accessories on short weekend trips.
- Choose a custom DIY 100Ah build: if you prioritize maximum DC efficiency, superior solar tracking, modular longevity, custom power connections like Anderson Powerpoles, and higher total battery capacity for long off-grid deployments, especially if radio is the primary thing you’re powering.
