The FTM-300DR sits in an interesting spot in Yaesu’s lineup, compact enough to almost pass for an oversized handheld but built and marketed as a mobile radio with genuine System Fusion capability.
Compact Footprint, Real Mobile Power
Despite its smaller size compared to traditional mobile radios, the FTM-300DR puts out real mobile-class power output on both 2 meters and 70 centimeters, giving you a meaningful step up over any handheld while keeping the physical footprint manageable in vehicles where a full-size mobile feels like overkill.
Fusion and Dual Receive
Full System Fusion support and genuine dual receive make it a capable digital voice mobile, and the color display handles Wires-X room browsing reasonably well for its size. It is not as feature-rich as the flagship FT5D handheld, but for a mobile install it covers the essentials well.
Installation Flexibility
The compact single-unit design (rather than a separated head and body) makes installation simpler in vehicles with more available dash space, though it offers less mounting flexibility than the FTM-500D’s detachable head if your specific vehicle has tight space constraints.
