The real-time spectrum scope was one of the original IC-7300’s standout features, and it’s just as central to how I actually find activity on the Mark II.
Reading the waterfall for real activity
The scope shows signal activity across a span of spectrum in real time, with history scrolling down the screen. Instead of tuning slowly across a band, I glance at the scope for clusters of activity and jump straight there. A DX pileup usually shows up as a wide, dense patch right where the action is.
Adjusting span for what you’re doing
A wide span gives a broad view when you first tune to a band. Once you’ve found where the activity is, narrowing the span gives more resolution to pick out individual signals, especially useful in a tight pileup.
Spotting propagation changes as they happen
Watching the scope over time shows propagation shifting in something close to real time. A band that was quiet suddenly filling with activity is often your first sign an opening just happened, sometimes faster than a spot would show up on a cluster.
Bigger screen, easier reading
If you’ve got the HDMI output running on an external monitor, this whole habit gets easier, a bigger waterfall makes clusters of activity and propagation changes even easier to spot at a glance.
How I actually use it
- Start with a wide span to get oriented on a new band.
- Narrow the span once you’ve spotted a cluster worth working.
- Watch for sudden changes in activity as an early signal of a propagation shift.
- Use it alongside, not instead of, actual listening, the scope shows you where to point your ears.
Once this becomes habit, band hunting feels a lot less like guesswork and a lot more like reading a map of where the action actually is.
