The FTX-1’s 3D Spectrum Stream display is one of those features that sounds like a gimmick until you actually rely on it to find activity instead of slowly tuning across a band hoping to stumble onto something.

Reading the waterfall for real activity

The scope shows signal activity across a span of spectrum in real time, with history scrolling down the screen. Instead of tuning slowly across a band, I glance at the scope for clusters of activity and jump straight there. On a band with a DX pileup running, you’ll usually see a wide, dense patch of signal right where the action is, that’s a faster way to find it than sweeping by ear.

Adjusting span for what you’re actually doing

A wide span gives you a broad view of the whole band segment, useful for getting oriented when you first tune to a band. Once you’ve found where the activity is, narrowing the span gives you more resolution to actually pick out individual signals and work them precisely, especially useful in a tight pileup where signals are close together.

Spotting propagation changes as they happen

Watching the scope over time, not just at a single glance, shows you propagation shifting in something close to real time. A band that was quiet suddenly filling with signal activity is often your first sign an opening just happened, sometimes faster than a spot would show up on a cluster.

How I actually use it

  • Start with a wide span to get oriented on a new band.
  • Narrow the span once you’ve spotted a cluster of activity worth working.
  • Watch for sudden changes in activity as an early signal of a propagation shift.
  • Use it alongside, not instead of, actual listening, the scope shows you where to point your ears, it doesn’t replace them.

Once this becomes habit, band hunting feels a lot less like guesswork and a lot more like reading a map of where the action actually is.
