A radio is only as good as the battery sitting inside or next to it, and a battery that has been sitting untouched for two years is not the same battery it was on day one. Storing and rotating batteries properly is one of the least glamorous parts of a comms plan and one of the most commonly ignored.

Batteries Die Sitting in a Drawer Just as Often as in Use

Self-discharge, chemical degradation, and simple age all reduce a battery’s real capacity even if it is never actually used. A go-bag radio charged once and left alone for a year is a gamble, not a guarantee, regardless of how well it worked the day you packed it.

LiFePO4 vs. Alkaline for Long-Term Storage

LiFePO4 holds its charge far longer in storage than most other rechargeable chemistries, which is part of why I lean on it for my own gear, as I cover in LiFePO4 vs. SLA. Disposable alkaline batteries have a genuinely long shelf life and no self-discharge curve to worry about, which makes them a smart choice specifically for a radio that sits untouched in a go-bag for long stretches.

A Rotation Schedule That Actually Gets Followed

Tie battery rotation to something you already do regularly, replacing them the same weekend you change smoke detector batteries or check your go-bag contents. A rotation schedule that depends on remembering it on its own rarely survives more than a year.

Testing Under Load, Not Just Checking Voltage

A battery can read a healthy voltage on a cheap tester and still collapse the moment a radio actually draws current from it under real transmit load. Test batteries by actually keying up the radio and running it for a few minutes during your regular practice sessions, the same drills I cover in training your family or group, rather than trusting a static voltage reading alone.
