Part of our The Icom IC-7300 Mark II: The Complete Guide.

The built-in LAN port is one of the bigger practical upgrades on the Mark II. The original IC-7300 needed a dedicated server PC running around the clock to do remote operation through RS-BA1, the Mark II does the server job itself.

Why this matters

Running the original setup meant leaving a computer physically connected to the radio powered on all the time just to enable remote access. With the Ethernet port built into the Mark II itself, the radio connects straight to your network and RS-BA1 talks to it directly, no intermediary PC required.

Basic network setup

Connect the radio’s Ethernet port to your router or network switch with a standard cable. In the radio’s network menu, you can use DHCP for a quick setup or assign a static IP if you want a predictable address for port forwarding later. I run mine on a static IP, it makes remote access configuration much simpler to manage long term.

Installing and pointing RS-BA1

Install Icom’s RS-BA1 software on the remote computer you’ll be operating from, then add the radio using its IP address rather than searching for a USB-connected unit. Once paired, RS-BA1 gives you rig control, audio, and most front panel functions remotely, functionally similar to sitting in front of the radio.

Local network first

Get this working from another device on your own home network before attempting remote access from outside it. That confirms the radio, RS-BA1, and your network are all cooperating before you introduce the added complexity of port forwarding or a VPN, see my notes on securing this setup on the network before opening anything up to the internet.

Setup checklist

  • Connect the radio’s Ethernet port directly to your network.
  • Assign a static IP if you plan to enable remote access from outside your home network.
  • Test locally on your home network before attempting remote access from elsewhere.
  • Confirm RS-BA1 audio and rig control both work before considering the setup complete.

Not needing a dedicated server PC for this is a real quality of life improvement, and it’s the feature that makes remote operation genuinely practical rather than something you’d only bother setting up occasionally.
