Once RS-BA1 is working locally, the temptation is to open things up so you can operate from outside your home network too. Before doing that, it’s worth being deliberate about how you expose a networked radio to the internet.
Why this deserves real attention
A radio connected to your home network is still a device on that network, and opening ports to reach it from outside means thinking about it the same way you’d think about any other exposed device. This isn’t unique to ham radio gear, but it’s easy to overlook when the goal is just getting on the air remotely.
Static IP first
Assign the radio a static IP on your local network before doing anything else, port forwarding rules pointed at a DHCP address that can change are a recipe for a broken remote connection at the worst possible time.
VPN over direct port forwarding
My preference is connecting back into my home network over a VPN rather than forwarding RS-BA1’s ports directly to the internet. It adds a login step, but it means the radio itself isn’t directly reachable from the open internet, only from devices that have already authenticated onto my network. If your router supports a VPN server natively, this is a relatively low-effort way to get meaningfully better security than direct port forwarding.
If you do forward ports directly
Forward only the specific ports RS-BA1 actually requires, not a broad range, and check that your radio and router both support strong authentication rather than relying on obscurity. Keep the radio’s firmware and RS-BA1 software current, since security fixes do occasionally land in updates.
My actual setup
- Static IP assigned to the radio on the local network.
- VPN back into the home network rather than direct port forwarding, when possible.
- Firmware and RS-BA1 kept current rather than left on whatever version was installed at setup.
- Periodic check that no unnecessary ports are still open from earlier troubleshooting.
None of this is complicated, but it’s worth doing deliberately rather than opening ports as a quick fix and forgetting about it. Treat a remote-accessible radio the same way you’d treat any other device you’re exposing to the internet.
