Modern shacks have quietly become networked environments. Logging software syncing to the cloud, remote SDR access, WSJT-X talking to a network-connected radio, an internet-linked AllStarLink node, all of it depends on your shack’s network holding up reliably, and WiFi isn’t always up to the job.
Why WiFi struggles in a shack specifically
A shack full of metal equipment cases, coax runs, and RF energy is a genuinely hostile environment for WiFi reliability, separate from the usual household WiFi congestion issues. Transmitting HF gear in particular can cause real interference with 2.4 GHz WiFi specifically, and a dropped WiFi connection during a critical Winlink transfer or a remote logging sync is a frustrating, avoidable problem.
Where wired Ethernet earns its keep
For anything that genuinely needs to stay connected, a network-controlled amplifier, a remote SDR receiver, a dedicated logging computer, a hardwired Ethernet connection eliminates the RF interference and congestion issues WiFi is prone to in a shack environment entirely. Running Ethernet doesn’t have to mean tearing open walls, a simple unmanaged switch at the operating position with a single run back to your router covers most shack networking needs without much effort.
What can stay on WiFi
Not everything needs a wire. Phones, tablets, and casual devices you’re checking logs or propagation apps on are fine on WiFi, since a brief hiccup there is an inconvenience rather than a lost contact or a corrupted file transfer. I’d draw the line at anything actively involved in making or logging a contact, or anything remotely controlling equipment, that’s the gear worth the extra effort of running a physical cable to.
