Every antenna feedline has to get from outside to your radio somehow, and a proper feedthrough panel is a small project that solves weatherproofing, grounding, and cable management problems all at once, compared to routing coax through a cracked window or a hastily drilled hole. Whether you own your home and want a permanent solution or you’re renting and need something fully reversible, there’s a right way to do this.
Why a Dedicated Panel Beats Improvised Entry Points
Running coax through a window gap lets weather, insects, and drafts in right along with your feedline, and it usually means the window can never fully close again. A dedicated panel, whether a purpose-built commercial feedthrough plate or a homemade version using bulkhead connectors, gives you a clean, sealed, and permanent entry point built for exactly this purpose. This is the right answer if you own your home and are setting up a permanent station.
Bulkhead Connectors vs Direct Feedthrough
A bulkhead panel with SO-239 or N-type connectors mounted through it lets you connect outdoor coax to indoor coax at the wall itself, which is convenient for maintenance since you can disconnect right at the panel rather than tracing a single continuous run. Running one continuous coax cable straight through a sealed grommet avoids an extra connector (and the loss and potential failure point it introduces), but it makes future changes or troubleshooting somewhat less convenient. Both approaches are legitimate. Pick based on whether you value maintenance convenience or minimizing connectors more.
Renting? Go Through a Window Instead
If drilling through a wall isn’t an option, a flat feedthrough panel, or even flattened coax, run through a window that’s cracked open and sealed with weatherstripping foam is the standard renter-friendly approach. It’s not as weatherproof or permanent as a wall panel, but it’s fully reversible when you move out, which matters a lot if a lease is in play.
Grounding at the Entry Point
This is also the natural place to bond your coax shields to your station’s grounding system, ideally right where the cable enters the structure, before it travels any further inside. Doing this at the feedthrough panel rather than at the radio itself keeps any lightning-induced surge current on the outside of your building rather than routing it through your living space.
Weatherproofing the Outside
- Seal around the panel itself with an appropriate exterior sealant rated for the material you are mounting to, silicone caulk or a purpose-built RF-transparent sealant, not just tape.
- Use self-amalgamating tape over any outdoor connector, then a layer of electrical tape over that, to keep water fully out of the connection.
- Mount the panel with a slight downward slope on any cable entry to encourage water to run off rather than pool at the entry point.
- Add a drip loop, a low point in the cable run before it reaches the wall, on any cable entering from outside. It keeps water from running straight into the hole even if the seal is imperfect.
Water intrusion around an improperly sealed feedthrough is one of the most common causes of slow, mysterious antenna system degradation, and it usually shows up as gradually rising SWR long before you find the actual leak. This is a modest weekend project that pays off every time it rains and you’re not wondering whether water is finding its way into your wall.
