Part of our The Yaesu FTX-1: The Complete Guide.
GridTracker doesn’t talk to the FTX-1 directly, it sits alongside WSJT-X and picks up data from it, but getting that chain set up correctly turns FT8 operating with the FTX-1 into a mostly hands-off logging experience. Here’s how mine is configured.
The chain: FTX-1, WSJT-X, GridTracker
The FTX-1 connects to your computer through your digital interface for audio and PTT, and separately through CAT control for frequency and mode reporting. WSJT-X needs both working to decode correctly and log against the right band. GridTracker then reads WSJT-X’s log output in real time, it doesn’t talk to the radio at all, it just watches what WSJT-X is doing.
Setting up WSJT-X to feed GridTracker
In WSJT-X’s settings, enable UDP broadcasting of status and logged QSOs on the local network, GridTracker listens for this. Point GridTracker at the same UDP port WSJT-X is broadcasting on, which is usually the default unless you’ve changed it. Once both are running, working a contact and logging it in WSJT-X should populate it in GridTracker within a second or two.
What GridTracker actually adds
Beyond just displaying contacts on a map as you make them, GridTracker can push logged contacts out to QRZ, LoTW, and other services automatically if you’ve entered your credentials. This is where the automatic part really pays off, I’m not manually uploading log files after a session, it’s already been distributed by the time I close the laptop.
Getting it right the first time
- Confirm WSJT-X’s UDP settings are enabled before troubleshooting GridTracker itself.
- Match the UDP port between the two programs exactly.
- Enter your QSL service credentials once in GridTracker’s settings so uploads happen automatically.
- Check your first few contacts actually appear correctly before trusting it unattended for a full session.
Once this chain is working, FT8 with the FTX-1 becomes almost entirely about making contacts, not managing paperwork afterward. That’s the whole appeal for me.
