Part of our Yaesu FTX-1: The Complete Guide.

None of this is complicated, but it’s the boring maintenance work that keeps a radio you rely on actually reliable years down the road, especially one that moves between the field and the shack as much as the FTX-1 does.

Cooling under sustained load

The SPA-1 runs warm under extended digital mode duty cycles at full power, that’s normal, but don’t box it into a tight space without airflow. I leave clear space around the vents on the desk and never stack anything on top of it, even when it looks like it’s not actively transmitting. Heat buildup over a long contest session or a heavy FT8 stretch is exactly when thermal issues show up.

Keeping the field unit clean

Dust, sand, and moisture from field use accumulate around the connectors and the dock interface faster than you’d expect. I wipe the unit down after every field session, paying particular attention to the dock connector pins and the SD card slot, and check the touchscreen for grit before it gets ground in by normal use.

Battery care over the long haul

Lithium batteries degrade faster if left fully charged and unused for long stretches, or fully drained and stored that way. If the Field Head is going into storage between trips for more than a few weeks, I leave it at a partial charge rather than topped off or empty, which is standard lithium battery practice that applies just as much here as with any other lithium-powered device.

My actual maintenance routine

  • Clear ventilation space around the SPA-1 at all times, no exceptions for a quick session.
  • Wipe down and inspect connectors after every field trip, not just when something looks obviously dirty.
  • Store batteries at partial charge for any extended downtime.
  • Do a quick visual and functional check before any trip that matters, don’t discover a problem for the first time on-site.

This is maybe fifteen minutes a month of actual effort, spread across small habits rather than one big maintenance session. It’s cheap insurance against a radio letting you down exactly when you need it most.
