Part of our FT-891: The Complete Guide.
The FT-891 packs a lot of menu depth into a very small radio, and the factory defaults leave real performance on the table. Here’s what I changed in the first couple weeks that stuck.
Roofing filter and AGC
The stock 3 kHz roofing filter is fine for general use, but on a crowded contest weekend I narrow it down when I’ve got the optional filter installed, and even without it, tightening the DSP filter width helps more than most people expect. AGC decay is set conservatively at default, I sped it up for SSB the same way I did on the FTX-1, it makes pileup work noticeably less fatiguing.
Display and power save
The 891’s small display defaults to a short timeout and aggressive dimming, which makes sense for a radio that’s often running on battery in a manpack setup, but is annoying at the desk on shack power. I keep two different profiles in mind mentally, brighter and no timeout when I’m on the bench, dimmed and power-conscious when I’m running off the LiFePO4 box in the field.
Data and mic gain defaults
Out of the box, the data port gain settings are tuned for a generic interface, not specifically for the Digirig DR-891 I run. I dropped the input level down from default and confirmed against the ALC meter, since the factory setting over-drove the input enough to cause occasional splatter on FT8 until I fixed it.
Menu changes I’d actually recommend
- Faster AGC decay for SSB, especially if you work pileups or contests.
- Narrow the DSP or roofing filter width when the band is crowded, don’t leave it wide by default.
- Adjust display timeout and brightness based on whether you’re on shack power or battery.
- Check data port gain against the ALC meter rather than trusting the factory default, especially if you’re running the Digirig DR-891.
Take it slow
Same advice as always with a menu this deep, change one thing at a time and give it a few sessions before deciding it’s actually an improvement. The FT-891 has enough menu items that chasing all of them on day one just wastes an evening.
