The whole pitch of the FTX-1 is that one radio can be a QRP field rig or a 100W base station depending on what you attach to it. Docking the Field Head to the SPA-1 is what turns it into the Optima configuration, and while Yaesu made it tool-free, there are a few things worth knowing before you leave it parked on the desk.
The physical dock
The Field Head slides onto the back of the SPA-1 and locks in with a latch, no screws or tools involved. Line up the connector on the bottom of the head with the socket on the amp, seat it flat, and you’ll feel and hear the latch engage. If it doesn’t seat cleanly on the first try, don’t force it. Pull it back off and check the alignment, the connector pins are not something you want to bend by pushing at an angle.
Power and grounding before you key up
Once docked, the SPA-1 needs its own 13.8V DC supply, the Field Head’s internal battery isn’t running a 100W amplifier. I feed mine from an Astron linear supply on the bench. Before your first transmit at full power, confirm you’ve got a solid station ground on the amp chassis, not just relying on the coax shield. A 100W amplifier with a marginal ground is a good way to introduce RF into your audio chain or your computer if you’re running digital modes through it.
Let the built-in tuner do its job
The SPA-1 carries the automatic antenna tuner, so once you’re docked, you don’t need a separate tuner in line for reasonable mismatches. Tune through your antenna once at low power before running it up to full output, especially if you’re on a new band or a marginal antenna. Let the tuner find its match at 5-10W rather than slamming it with 100W on the first key-down.
Things I check before I leave it set up long term
- Ventilation around the SPA-1. It runs warm under sustained digital mode duty cycles, don’t box it in.
- A dedicated 13.8V feed that isn’t shared with something that’ll sag under load when you key up.
- Cable strain relief at the dock connector so the head isn’t hanging on that one connection if something gets bumped.
- Confirming the tuner’s memory has actually stored your common bands so retuning is fast on band changes.
Once it’s docked and grounded properly, the Optima setup genuinely behaves like a real base station. The tool-free docking is more than a gimmick, I’ve pulled the head off for a POTA trip and had it back on the SPA-1 running full power again in under a minute.
