The FT-891 isn’t the radio most people picture running a contest, but its compact size hasn’t stopped me from putting real hours on it during a weekend. Here’s how I set it up.
AGC and filter settings for pace
Faster AGC decay matters more in a contest than almost anywhere else, you need to be ready for the next call the instant the last exchange ends. I also narrow the filter when the band is packed, the 891’s DSP filtering does real work here even without the optional roofing filter installed.
Logging through the Digirig DR-891
CAT control through the DR-891 feeds my logging software frequency and mode automatically, which matters during a fast run where you don’t have time to manually confirm band changes between exchanges. Test this connection the day before, not the morning of, a CAT drop mid-contest costs you both the fix time and your rhythm.
Power and heat over a long session
Running the 891 at full 100W for an extended contest session means real current draw and real heat. Make sure your power supply, whether that’s a bench supply or the LiFePO4 box, can actually sustain the load for the full contest window, and give the radio some airflow, it’s a small chassis without a lot of thermal mass to soak up extended full-power operation.
Pre-contest checklist
- Test CAT control through the DR-891 with your contest logger the day before.
- Set faster AGC decay and a narrower filter for exchange pacing.
- Confirm your power source can sustain full output for the whole session.
- Give the radio airflow, don’t box it in for a long contest weekend.
- Have a backup logging method in case software crashes mid-run.
The 891 won’t out-muscle a full-size contest station, but for a compact radio it holds up better over a long weekend than its size suggests, as long as you’ve planned power and cooling instead of just assuming it’ll handle it.
