Field Day is a 24-hour event, and a lot of stations that look great at hour two are falling apart by hour twenty. Building something that actually holds up takes different planning than a quick POTA activation.
Power that lasts the full event
Battery-only setups that work fine for a two-hour activation will run dry well before 24 hours of Field Day operating. Plan for generator or solar-supplemented power if you’re aiming for a serious continuous effort, and if you’re battery-only, budget significantly more capacity than a simple duty-cycle calculation suggests, since Field Day operating tends to run heavier duty cycles than casual POTA activating, especially if you’re actively running a pileup rather than just calling CQ occasionally.
Antennas that survive weather and wear
A quick wire antenna thrown up for an afternoon POTA session isn’t built for a full day and night outdoors, including whatever weather shows up. Use proper guying on any mast, weatherproof your connections against dew and rain, and have a backup antenna ready to swap in if your primary fails partway through, since a failed antenna at hour 15 with no backup means your station is done for the rest of the event.
Operator rotation and rest
The human factor matters as much as the equipment. A single operator trying to run a station solo for 24 hours will burn out and make mistakes, missing calls and logging errors both increase noticeably with fatigue. If you’re running as a group, build an actual rotation schedule in advance rather than improvising it, and make sure someone’s specifically responsible for keeping people fed and hydrated through the overnight hours when it’s easiest to forget.
