One Box, Every Band You’d Actually Need
When I think through what a grab-and-go radio needs to do in an actual SHTF scenario, the list is short: reach the local repeater network, monitor and work HF for anything past line of sight, and do it all from one radio I’m not juggling with a second box and a second set of cables. The FT-857D checks every one of those boxes. HF through 70 centimeters, all mode, in a chassis you can tuck into a pack. That’s the whole appeal, and it’s why this radio keeps coming up in prepper and emcomm circles years after Yaesu stopped making it.
Small Footprint, Real Power
The size is the whole point. A full 100 watts on HF and 6 meters and 50 watts on 2 meters is enough to actually work stations, not just listen, and it comes out of a radio small enough to live in a rugged case with room to spare for a mic and a few cables. Compare that to hauling a full-size HF base radio plus a separate VHF/UHF mobile for a bug-out kit, and the space and weight savings add up fast. The tradeoff is that 20-watt UHF ceiling I’ve written about elsewhere, which matters less in a grab-and-go kit built around HF and 2m as the primary bands anyway.
A Receiver That Covers More Than Ham Bands
The part that gets overlooked is how wide the receiver actually goes: 100 kHz to 56 MHz, 76 to 108 MHz, 118 to 164 MHz, and 420 to 470 MHz. That’s full shortwave SWL coverage, the AM and FM broadcast bands, civilian and military aircraft band, and beyond, all without leaving VFO mode. In a grab-and-go kit, that general-coverage receive range matters as much as the transmit side does. It’s the radio you’d have monitoring shortwave news broadcasts, aircraft traffic, or whatever else is on the air, not just your own local nets.
Runs on What You’ll Actually Have
This is a 13.8V radio through and through, which means it runs directly off the same LiFePO4 battery boxes and solar setups most preparedness-minded hams already have for other gear. No separate charger, no proprietary battery pack to keep track of. Pair it with a compact HF antenna you can deploy fast, an End-Fed Half-Wave or a portable vertical, and you have a station that goes from case to on-the-air in a few minutes.
Where It Actually Fits in a Comms Plan
The FT-857D isn’t trying to be your primary base station. Its job in a preparedness setup is being the radio that comes with you when you can’t take the shack: bugging out, staging at a relative’s place, or running a temporary station during an evacuation. HF gives you a way to reach people well outside the immediate area when local infrastructure and even repeaters are down, and VHF/UHF covers the local net and simplex traffic once you’re back in range of other operators. That’s the kind of layered coverage a solid PACE communications plan is built around.
A Note on the MARS Mod and GMRS
If your kit includes an FT-857D that’s had a MARS/CAP modification done, worth restating here since it comes up a lot in prepper circles: one of the common mod variants extends the radio’s transmit range down far enough to physically reach into GMRS territory. That doesn’t make transmitting there legal. GMRS requires FCC type-accepted equipment, and a modified amateur radio was never certified for that, regardless of what your license covers. I go into this in more depth in my MARS/CAP mod writeup. If GMRS is part of your family comms plan, keep it on a radio that’s actually built and certified for it.
Buying One for the Kit Today
Yaesu discontinued the FT-857D in 2020, so there are no new units coming. Everything on the market now is used, and that changes how you should think about putting one in a bug-out kit. If something fails on a used radio and parts or repair aren’t available, you could be looking at an expensive fix, or no fix at all. That’s a real risk for a radio you’re counting on to work when it matters. The most common issue I see reported is dead pixels on the LCD display. The good news is the screen itself is a separate, replaceable part, and a replacement runs around $60. It’s a fair repair cost for an otherwise solid radio, but it’s worth budgeting for and worth checking closely before you buy, since a display with dead pixels won’t get better on its own.
One more thing to check when you’re shopping: US-market FT-857D units use two SO-239 connectors on the rear panel, one for HF/50MHz and one for 144/430MHz. Non-US export units I’ve come across instead pair a Type N connector on the VHF/UHF side with an SO-239 on the HF side. If you’re sourcing cables, adapters, or a replacement radio for your kit, confirm which configuration you’re actually holding before you assume your existing coax and connectors will just bolt on.
The Catch
None of this is free. The menu system is genuinely rough, and the worst time to be relearning a hold-and-turn sequence is mid-evacuation with a headlamp and cold hands. If this radio is going in a bug-out kit, do the work ahead of time: pre-program your local repeaters and a handful of HF frequencies, print a field card, and actually practice pulling the radio out cold and getting on the air. A shack in a box only earns that name if you can run it under pressure, not just on the bench.
