Installing a dual-band mobile follows the same basic principles as any mobile radio install, and getting the fundamentals right the first time saves you from chasing mystery problems down the road.
Power: Straight to the Battery
Run power leads directly to the battery rather than tapping a convenient accessory circuit, using wire gauge sized correctly for the radio’s current draw and the length of the run. Fuse both the positive and negative leads close to the battery, not just at the radio end, following the same fusing principles that apply to any 12V shack or vehicle wiring.
Antenna Mounting and Ground Plane
An NMO-style mount through the roof gives you the best ground plane and the cleanest overall performance, though many hams prefer a trunk lip or hatchback mount to avoid drilling. Whatever mount you choose, more metal ground plane around the antenna base generally improves performance, and a mount with minimal surrounding metal will show a worse SWR and reduced efficiency compared to a proper roof mount.
Head Unit Placement and Cable Routing
If your radio supports a separated head, like the FTM-500D or similar detachable-head mobiles, plan the mounting location before you start running cable, since a head mounted somewhere you cannot comfortably reach or see defeats the purpose of the install. Route control and power cables away from factory wiring harnesses and moving parts, securing them with zip ties or cable channels so nothing rattles loose or gets pinched over time.
Grounding Beyond the Chassis
Relying solely on the vehicle chassis as your radio’s ground is a common source of RF noise and alternator whine, since chassis ground paths in modern vehicles are not always as clean electrically as older vehicles. A dedicated ground strap from the radio chassis to the vehicle’s actual battery ground point often resolves noise issues that chassis grounding alone does not.

Check SWR on both bands once everything is mounted, listen for engine or alternator noise with the vehicle running, and confirm the radio holds a steady voltage under transmit load before considering the install finished. Catching a problem now is far easier than troubleshooting it after everything is buttoned up and hidden behind trim panels.
