Part of our Handheld Radios (HTs) guide.

The FT5D sits at the top of Yaesu’s Fusion handheld lineup, and it is built to showcase everything System Fusion and Wires-X can do rather than just check the digital voice box the way a budget dual-mode radio does.

GPS and APRS Integration

Built-in GPS feeds directly into APRS functionality, letting the FT5D transmit and display position data natively without any external tracker or phone app. This is a genuine strength of the higher-tier Fusion handhelds, and it makes the FT5D a strong choice if APRS tracking is something you actually plan to use regularly rather than a nice-to-have feature you never touch.

Display and Touchscreen

The color touchscreen display is a substantial upgrade over Yaesu’s more budget-oriented Fusion handhelds, making Wires-X room navigation and repeater lists far easier to browse than scrolling through a small button-driven menu. It is a genuinely modern interface for a handheld radio.

True Dual Receive

Like other flagship handhelds in this tier, the FT5D offers genuine simultaneous dual receive rather than a simulated version, letting you monitor two frequencies at once without missing traffic on either.

Is the Flagship Price Worth It

Budget Fusion-capable radios exist at a fraction of the FT5D’s price, and if Fusion is just one of several digital modes you want to try, starting cheaper makes sense. But if you are already committed to the Fusion and Wires-X ecosystem and use GPS-based APRS regularly, the FT5D’s extra features are genuinely useful rather than gimmicks, which is not something you can say about every flagship handheld on the market.
