By 2013, hams had two digital voice options: Icom’s purpose-built D-STAR, and the commercial DMR standard amateurs had adopted for its cheap hardware. Yaesu decided the market needed a third option, one built entirely in-house, and released System Fusion, commonly known as YSF.

Yaesu builds its own standard

Unlike DMR, which Yaesu had no hand in creating, System Fusion is a digital system developed entirely by Yaesu specifically for amateur use. It uses C4FM modulation, a variant of 4FSK, similar in concept to DMR’s modulation scheme but implemented as Yaesu’s own proprietary system rather than an adopted commercial standard. The FTM-400, released not long after the original System Fusion announcement, and the handheld FT1D were among the first radios to bring the standard to market, giving hams their first taste of automatic mode switching in a mobile and a handheld form factor respectively.

Automatic mode switching, the headline feature

What genuinely sets YSF apart from DMR and D-STAR is automatic mode switching. A System Fusion repeater or radio can automatically detect whether an incoming signal is analog FM or digital C4FM and switch accordingly, without the operator having to manually flip a mode setting. That’s a meaningful convenience for repeater systems serving a mixed community of analog and digital users, something neither DMR nor D-STAR handles as gracefully.

Two data rates, one mode

System Fusion actually offers two operating modes within C4FM. V/D mode (Voice/Data) runs at a lower data rate and dedicates part of the bandwidth to a data stream alongside the voice, useful for things like GPS position reporting riding along with a conversation. VW mode (Voice Wide) drops the data channel entirely and puts all the available bandwidth into the voice codec instead, producing noticeably better audio quality at the cost of losing that simultaneous data capability. Most repeaters and radios let the operator pick which mode fits the situation.

Natural-sounding audio

YSF has a reputation among digital voice users for producing the most natural-sounding audio of the three major modes, a product of Yaesu’s codec choices and implementation. For hams who found DMR or D-STAR audio a bit processed or robotic, System Fusion was often the mode that felt closest to familiar FM.

WIRES-X and the reflector network

Yaesu built its own internet-linking system, WIRES-X, to connect System Fusion repeaters and rooms the same way D-STAR reflectors and DMR talkgroups connect their respective networks. It’s Yaesu’s answer to the same basic problem every digital voice mode has to solve: how do you extend a local repeater conversation to hams anywhere in the world. WIRES-X itself replaced an older, more limited Yaesu system called simply WIRES that had linked analog repeaters together over the internet since the early 2000s, well before System Fusion existed.

Fusion II and the standard’s evolution

Yaesu hasn’t left System Fusion static since 2013. A later revision, sometimes marketed as Fusion II, refined the automatic mode detection and added improvements aimed at making the analog-digital handoff even smoother on repeaters serving a genuinely mixed community of users. Newer System Fusion radios and repeaters carry these refinements forward, though the core C4FM modulation and the V/D and VW mode structure from the original 2013 launch remain the foundation everything else is built on.

Three modes, one hobby, still not fully connected

With System Fusion’s arrival, amateur radio had three distinct, largely incompatible digital voice ecosystems running in parallel. That fragmentation is exactly what pushed the hotspot cross-mode transcoding development I mentioned in the DMR post, and it’s part of why choosing a digital voice mode today still comes down to local repeater availability as much as personal preference.
