Most hams experience VHF and UHF exclusively through FM repeaters, and that is a perfectly good way to use those bands, but there is an entirely different style of operating happening on the same bands that most repeater users never encounter.
Why Weak Signal SSB Exists
FM repeaters are built around convenience and coverage, trading some technical performance for ease of use. Weak signal SSB, operated on the lower, narrower segments of the VHF and UHF bands, trades that convenience for genuinely better range and the ability to work direct, station-to-station contacts far beyond typical FM simplex range, without depending on any repeater infrastructure at all.
Where It Actually Happens
Each VHF and UHF band has a designated weak-signal calling frequency and sub-band, typically near the bottom edge of the band, set aside specifically for SSB and CW operation rather than FM. 144.200 MHz is the classic 2 meter SSB calling frequency, and similar conventions exist on 6 meters and 70 centimeters. This is genuinely different spectrum, culturally and technically, from the FM repeater portion of the same band.
What You Need to Get Started
Not every radio does SSB on VHF/UHF. Many handhelds and basic mobiles are FM-only, so getting into weak signal work typically means a multimode radio that supports SSB on these bands, along with a genuinely good directional antenna, since SSB weak-signal work rewards antenna gain far more than casual FM use does.
Combining With Propagation Enhancements
Weak signal SSB is also where tropospheric ducting, sporadic-E, and other VHF propagation enhancements really shine, since a technically good SSB signal can take full advantage of an opening in ways an FM signal often cannot.
