This is the most expensive post that I’ve made so far lol.. my HF journey has been fast and furious, but let me break it down and give some feedback on what I’ve owned/used so far
Yaesu FTX1 w/ Optima SPA-1 Amplifier
This has grown on me. When I initially got it, the firmware was a mess and quickly they addressed it all. Now it’s a pretty solid radio and I love the fact that I can remove the head and just have a nice and portable QRP radio when I want. I also like the UHF/VHF capabilities with it but I wish the Mars mod unlocked the GMRS transmit ability (it doesn’t, the mars mod on this only affects HF frequencies).
7300 MK2
Love this little radio. It’s primarily used for ft8 and digital modes in the shack, but the menu system is far better than the FTX and the clarity is on par.
Yaesu FT-891
This is the one I put in my jeep with the atas 120
This is perfect for portable ops if you use a resonant antenna or can tune an antenna well. Also works great with the ATAS120. This may never leave the jeep.
Xiegu G90
Great radio. The best tuner I’ve ever used. Light weight and compact for 20watts. Works so damn well that it’s hard to not recommend it to people.
