Knowing how to run a digital mode and knowing how to pass real emergency traffic on one are two different skills. NBEMS exists to bridge that gap, and the practice nets built around it are how you actually build the muscle memory before you need it for something that matters.

What NBEMS actually is

NBEMS, Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software, isn’t a mode itself, it’s a framework built around the Fldigi suite (Fldigi, Flmsg, Flamp, and Flwrap) that standardizes how digital traffic gets formatted and passed during EmComm operations. Flmsg in particular handles standard ICS forms, health and welfare messages, and other structured traffic types, converting them into a format that can travel reliably over PSK31, Olivia, MFSK, or other narrow digital modes.

Why the structured forms matter

During an actual served-agency EmComm event, you’re not just relaying free-text chatter, you’re passing standardized forms that need to arrive intact and be immediately usable by whoever receives them. Flmsg’s templates match real ICS forms directly, which means the traffic you practice with is the same traffic you’d actually pass during a real activation, not a simplified stand-in for it.

Finding a practice net

Many ARES and RACES groups run regular NBEMS practice nets specifically to keep members comfortable with the software chain under low-stakes conditions. If your local group doesn’t have one, it’s worth proposing, since the gap between understanding NBEMS in theory and actually passing a form under time pressure is exactly the kind of thing that only closes with repetition. Check in a few times before you assume you’re ready to rely on it.
