Every dual-band handheld sold in the last twenty years covers 2 meters and 70 centimeters, but almost everyone talks about 2 meters and treats 70cm as an afterthought. That is a mistake. The 420 to 450 MHz band is doing real work, and knowing what it is actually good for changes how you use the radio you already own.

Shorter wavelength, different behavior

At 70cm you are working with a wavelength around 33 inches, roughly a third of 2 meters. That has two practical effects. Antennas get physically smaller for the same gain, which is why 70cm mobile and base antennas are so compact. But the signal is also more easily blocked by buildings, terrain, and foliage than 2 meters, so simplex range with a handheld tends to be a bit shorter on 70cm in cluttered environments, even though repeater performance is usually comparable.

Where 70cm actually earns its keep

Most busy metro areas have more usable 70cm repeaters than 2 meter repeaters, simply because more channels fit in the band and coordination is a little less contentious. It is also the band most DMR, D-STAR, and Fusion hotspots and repeaters default to, since digital voice systems benefit from the extra bandwidth. If you are running a hotspot at home, chances are it is transmitting on 70cm to your handheld. Cross-band repeat and why FRS radios look similar

Because 2 meters and 70cm behave differently but sit close enough in frequency for a single mobile radio to handle both, cross-band repeating between the two is common, letting a low power handheld reach a repeater system through a higher power mobile radio acting as a relay. It is also the band GMRS and FRS sit just below in the spectrum, which is part of why 70cm mobile antennas and GMRS antennas are often physically interchangeable even though the services are unrelated.

What to actually do with it

  • Program your local 70cm repeaters alongside your 2 meter ones, not as a backup, since 70cm often has less traffic and easier access during busy times
  • If you are running a hotspot for DMR, D-STAR, or Fusion, expect it to live on 70cm and plan your antenna placement accordingly
  • For simplex work, keep 2 meters as your default in wooded or hilly terrain, and lean on 70cm more in dense urban environments where its shorter wavelength antennas and repeater density work in your favor

70cm is not a lesser version of 2 meters, it is a different tool that happens to live in the same radio. Once you start treating it as its own band instead of the other half of a dual-bander, you will find yourself reaching for it more often, especially for digital modes and repeater-dense areas.
