A family living seasonally out of an RV or travel trailer cannot rely on a fixed rally point, a known local repeater, or a neighborhood that stays the same from month to month. The whole plan has to be portable in a way a stationary household’s plan does not.

Your Plan Changes Every Time You Change Location

A rally point that made sense at your last campground means nothing at your next one. Rather than a fixed location, build the plan around a process, check in with each other on arrival at a new site, confirm cell coverage, identify the nearest hospital and exit route, every single time you move.

GMRS and Ham Both Travel Well, Cell Coverage Doesn’t

Cell coverage in rural campgrounds and remote sites is often the weakest link in an otherwise normal trip, which makes GMRS and ham radio genuinely more valuable for a traveling family than for one that stays put near reliable towers. Both services work identically wherever you park, which is not true of your home internet or cell plan.

A Portable Version of Your Home Base Station

A compact GMRS base station setup, scaled down to something that mounts easily in an RV, gives you the same reliable home-base comms without needing to rebuild your setup from scratch at every stop. Keep the antenna mount and power connections simple enough to set up in minutes at each new site.

What to Reprogram at Every New Stop

Look up local repeaters at each new location before you need them, not after, following the same process I cover in finding and programming GMRS repeaters in your area. Five minutes of research on arrival beats scrambling to find a working repeater during an actual local emergency.
