Every school has its own emergency communication plan, and that plan is not yours to run or override. What a family radio plan can add is a way for parents to coordinate with each other once the school’s official channels are jammed with every other parent trying to do the exact same thing at once.
Schools Have Their Own Comms Plan, and It’s Not Yours
Do not show up planning to coordinate with the school over radio, and do not expect staff to interact with your family’s plan at all. Their job during a lockdown or emergency is following their own procedure, not fielding radio calls from parents. Your plan operates entirely on the parent side of that line.
What a Family Radio Plan Can Actually Add
The real value shows up when one parent is at the school gathering information and needs to relay it to a spouse or other family members who are stuck at work with no cell signal because everyone else in the parking lot is also trying to make a call at once. GMRS or ham radio moves that information around the family without competing for the same jammed cell tower.
Coordinating Pickup When Phone Lines Are Jammed
Decide in advance who is the designated pickup parent, where they will actually wait, and how they will confirm to the rest of the family that the kid has been picked up. This is the exact same rally point and confirmation logic from the key parts of a SHTF communications plan, just scaled down to a single, very specific location.
Talk to the School Before You Assume Anything
Ask the school directly what their actual reunification procedure is, since some districts have specific pickup rules during an emergency that will override whatever your family assumed. Build your GMRS-based family layer around their real procedure, not around a guess.
